About UK independent schools

Independent schools in the UK set their own admissions, curriculum and fees. Most teach GCSEs up to age 16 and A levels or the IB Diploma in the sixth form.

Many take international boarders from around age 13, and sixth form colleges focus on the last two years before university.

Why families choose them

  • Small classes and close academic support
  • Boarding houses with resident staff
  • Preparation for UK and international universities
  • Sport, music, art and clubs as part of school life
  • English language support for students who need it

Questions families ask

What is the difference between boarding and day places?

Boarding students live at the school during term. Day students live with their family, or with a host family nearby, and come in for lessons.

What is a sixth form?

The last two years of secondary school, usually ages 16 to 18, when students take A levels or the IB Diploma before university.

Which visa does a student under 18 need?

Students aged 4 to 17 at an independent school usually apply for a Child Student visa. Students aged 16 or 17 can choose a Child Student visa or a Student visa.

How much are the fees?

Fees differ by school, year group and boarding option, and they change every year. Ask us and we will confirm the current figures with the school.

When should we start?

Boarding places for Year 9 and sixth form entry often fill a year or more ahead. Starting early gives you more schools to choose from.

How we help

From first question to first day

Our advisers work with the family from the first question to the first day of term.

  1. Tell us about the student

Age, current school year, subjects and the kind of school you have in mind.

  2. Get a shortlist

We suggest schools that suit the student's level, budget and preferred part of the UK.

  3. Apply and sit entry tests

We prepare the application with you and help with the school's tests and interviews.

  4. Visa and guardianship

Students under 18 need the right visa and, at most boarding schools, a UK guardian. We guide you through both.
