This site is built to be used with a keyboard, a screen reader or at four times the type size, and it is tested that way rather than assumed to work. Where something here defeats you, tell us and we will fix it and send you what you were after in the meantime.
An accessibility statement is usually a paragraph claiming a standard. This one says what was actually done, what is tested, and what is known not to be good enough yet.
What was built in
Every part of this site can be reached and operated with a keyboard alone, and what is focused is visible while you do it. Every control says what it is to a screen reader, including the ones that are only a symbol. Every picture that carries meaning has a description; the ones that are decoration are marked as decoration so they are not read out.
Colour is never the only thing carrying a message. Text can be enlarged to twice the size without anything being lost, and the page still works at four hundred per cent on a narrow window. Motion is reduced to nothing for anybody whose system asks for that.
What is measured
Every run of text on this site is measured against the colour actually behind it, at desktop and at phone width, and held to the WCAG AA contrast ratio. Every filled shape is measured against its ground. These are checked automatically on every change rather than reviewed once, because a contrast failure is introduced by a stylesheet edit and nobody notices it by looking.
The target is WCAG 2.1 level AA. We believe the site meets it, and we are telling you what we measure so you can judge that claim rather than take it.
What we know is not right yet
Documents attached to pages - a prospectus, a form - come from the institutions that produced them, and some of them are inaccessible PDFs we cannot fix. Where you need one of those in another form, ask and we will get it or retype it.
Where a page carries something from another service, a map or an embedded video, that part is only as usable as the service makes it. We keep those to a minimum for exactly this reason.
If something here defeats you
Write to the address at the foot of this page and say what you were trying to do. Two things will happen: somebody will send you the information you were after, by whatever route works for you, within two working days; and the thing that stopped you goes on the list to be fixed, with the fix aimed for within a month.
You will not be asked to explain why you need it.
