Careers opportunities

Most of this sector's work sits with land managers, consultancies and regulators rather than with laboratories, and a great deal of it is field based. Employers weigh a placement year or a season of practical work as heavily as the degree classification.

Roles graduates go into

  • Environmental consultant
  • Agronomist
  • Sustainability officer
  • Conservation officer
  • Land or estate manager
  • Environmental compliance analyst

Where they work

  • Environmental consultancies
  • Farming and agri-supply businesses
  • The Environment Agency and Natural England
  • Water and utility companies
  • Conservation charities and trusts
After the course

Chartered status through the Institution of Environmental Sciences or a licence to practise from a sector body is the usual next step, and both count a year of logged practice.
