Modern Languages with Linguistics is offered widely in the UK, so the useful comparison is between departments rather than between countries. It is a three year undergraduate degree, with the specialism widening as you move through the years.
Teaching in Languages and Area Studies is seminar led, with close reading and regular written assessment rather than examinations.
Tuition ranges from £27,870 to £35,530 a year depending on the department, which is a real difference over the length of the course.
If you are comparing this against two or three other courses, send us all of them. We will set the entry terms and the fees side by side.
Very few graduates are employed to translate full time, and the ones who are usually specialise in law, medicine or technology as well. What the market actually buys is a second language attached to another skill, so the strongest destinations pair the language with commerce, policy or teaching.
For translators, membership of the Chartered Institute of Linguists or the ITI. For teachers, a recognised teaching qualification on top of the degree.
