Aberdeen
Geophysics is taught at a number of UK universities, and the entry terms are set department by department rather than nationally. It is a one year postgraduate programme, so the pace is quick and the dissertation carries real weight.
Teaching in Earth Sciences is offered as a three year BSc or a four year integrated masters, and the longer route is the usual step towards research.
Applications open around a year ahead of the intake. Getting the documents together early is what keeps the September date realistic.
Laboratory research is only one of the routes out of a science degree and it is the one with the fewest posts. The larger destinations are industry, analysis, regulation and teaching, and a placement year is the single strongest thing on a science graduate's application.
A research post normally needs a doctorate, and a master's with a substantial project is the usual route into one. Chartered scientist status is the alternative for those staying in industry.
