Overview

French and English is taught at a number of UK universities, and the entry terms are set department by department rather than nationally. It is a three year undergraduate degree, with the specialism widening as you move through the years.

Teaching in English Studies is seminar led, with close reading and regular written assessment rather than examinations. We currently work with 2 universities on this course.

The lowest English requirement we hold on this course is IELTS 6.0, and departments asking more than that usually expect a stronger academic record too.

If you are comparing this against two or three other courses, send us all of them. We will set the entry terms and the fees side by side.

Careers opportunities

Very few graduates are employed to translate full time, and the ones who are usually specialise in law, medicine or technology as well. What the market actually buys is a second language attached to another skill, so the strongest destinations pair the language with commerce, policy or teaching.

Roles graduates go into

  • Translator or interpreter
  • Localisation specialist
  • International account or project manager
  • Language teacher
  • Policy or research officer
  • Communications officer

Where they work

  • Translation and localisation agencies
  • International companies and their export teams
  • Government departments and diplomatic services
  • Language schools and universities
  • Publishing and media
After the course

For translators, membership of the Chartered Institute of Linguists or the ITI. For teachers, a recognised teaching qualification on top of the degree.
