Overview

Environmental Science (with integrated year in industry) is offered widely in the UK, so the useful comparison is between departments rather than between countries. It is a three year undergraduate degree, with the specialism widening as you move through the years.

Teaching in Environmental Sciences includes survey and data skills that carry directly into consultancy work.

The lowest English requirement we hold on this course is IELTS 6.5, and departments asking more than that usually expect a stronger academic record too. Tuition ranges from £19,190 to £21,875 a year depending on the department, which is a real difference over the length of the course.

If you are comparing this against two or three other courses, send us all of them. We will set the entry terms and the fees side by side.

Careers opportunities

Most of this sector's work sits with land managers, consultancies and regulators rather than with laboratories, and a great deal of it is field based. Employers weigh a placement year or a season of practical work as heavily as the degree classification.

Roles graduates go into

  • Environmental consultant
  • Agronomist
  • Sustainability officer
  • Conservation officer
  • Land or estate manager
  • Environmental compliance analyst

After the course

Chartered status through the Institution of Environmental Sciences or a licence to practise from a sector body is the usual next step, and both count a year of logged practice.
