Overview

Social Research Methods is offered widely in the UK, so the useful comparison is between departments rather than between countries. It is a one year postgraduate programme, so the pace is quick and the dissertation carries real weight.

Teaching in Operational Research is offered as a three year BSc or a four year integrated masters, and the longer route is the usual step towards research.

If you are comparing this against two or three other courses, send us all of them. We will set the entry terms and the fees side by side.

Entry requirements

Careers opportunities

Laboratory research is only one of the routes out of a science degree and it is the one with the fewest posts. The larger destinations are industry, analysis, regulation and teaching, and a placement year is the single strongest thing on a science graduate's application.

Roles graduates go into

  • Research or laboratory scientist
  • Analytical or quality scientist
  • Technical or scientific officer
  • Data or research analyst
  • Regulatory affairs officer
  • Science teacher, with a teaching qualification

Where they work

  • Pharmaceutical, chemical and manufacturing companies
  • Contract testing and analytical laboratories
  • University and institute research groups
  • Government agencies and regulators
  • Environmental and public health bodies
After the course

A research post normally needs a doctorate, and a master's with a substantial project is the usual route into one. Chartered scientist status is the alternative for those staying in industry.
