Overview

Bulgarian and Hungarian is taught at a number of UK universities, and the entry terms are set department by department rather than nationally. It is a three year undergraduate degree, with the specialism widening as you move through the years.

Teaching in Languages and Area Studies lets you specialise in a period, an author or a region in the later stages.

The lowest English requirement we hold on this course is IELTS 6.5, and departments asking more than that usually expect a stronger academic record too.

Applications open around a year ahead of the intake. Getting the documents together early is what keeps the September date realistic.

Careers opportunities

Very few graduates are employed to translate full time, and the ones who are usually specialise in law, medicine or technology as well. What the market actually buys is a second language attached to another skill, so the strongest destinations pair the language with commerce, policy or teaching.

  • Localisation specialist
  • International account or project manager
  • Language teacher
  • Policy or research officer

  • Government departments and diplomatic services
  • Language schools and universities
  • Publishing and media
After the course

For translators, membership of the Chartered Institute of Linguists or the ITI. For teachers, a recognised teaching qualification on top of the degree.
